5-Minute S’mores Baby Costume: Quick DIY Outfit Tutorial

My oldest daughter was too small for baby costumes—she was only a month old and a preemie—so we missed out on that stage. We also adopted my son at age seven, so he didn’t wear many baby outfits either. That makes me extra excited to share this adorable and easy 5-Minute S’mores Baby Costume for my littlest daughter. It’s quick to assemble, looks irresistible, and it’s guaranteed to get smiles on Halloween night. One simple rule with this costume: don’t actually eat the baby—just enjoy the cuteness.

What You Need to Make the S’mores Baby Costume

  • Two rectangular pieces of cardboard, each shorter and narrower than the baby (I used two flaps from a diaper box)
  • One white onesie and optional white pants
  • Dark brown fabric (about 1/4 yard is more than enough)
  • Eight small pieces of Velcro
  • Fabric glue or liquid stitch
  • Dark brown or black marker
  • Scissors

Putting Together the S’mores Baby Costume

  1. Trim the cardboard into neat rectangles if they aren’t already from the box flaps.
  2. On the brown side of each cardboard piece, draw a dotted center line and add eight dots (four on each half) to mimic graham cracker perforations.
  3. Attach the rough (hook) side of the Velcro to the non-brown side of each cardboard rectangle. Use four Velcro pieces per cardboard panel. Place them toward the corners but not directly in the corners so the panels sit flat and secure.
  4. Cut the dark brown fabric into two irregular, wavy-edged rectangles slightly larger than the cardboard pieces—this creates the “chocolate” layer peeking from beneath the graham cracker.
  5. Glue one brown fabric piece to the front of the onesie and one to the back using fabric glue or liquid stitch. Position them where the Velcro on the cardboard will meet.
  6. Allow the glue to dry fully before dressing the baby so there’s no sticky mess and the costume is safe to wear.
  7. Press the soft (loop) sides of the Velcro onto the brown fabric, matching the placement used on the cardboard panels.
  8. Dress the baby in the onesie (and pants if using).
  9. Attach the cardboard panels to the Velcro on the onesie to complete the s’mores look.
  10. Head out for trick-or-treating and enjoy the compliments—again, don’t eat the baby!
