Visiting Tanimura & Antle
I’m always looking for ways to help consumers learn how to choose, store and serve more fruits and vegetables. A recent visit to Tanimura & Antle gave me a deeper appreciation for the care and expertise behind the produce we find in stores.
Tanimura & Antle is one of the largest independent lettuce growers in the United States. With farms across more than 35,000 acres of fertile fields, they supply a full line of premium fresh produce across North America, Europe and Asia.
Based in California’s Salinas Valley, the team at Tanimura & Antle is widely known for their Artisan Lettuce—varieties such as Petite Oak, Petite Gem and Petite Tango. During my visit I also had the chance to learn about the technology, skill and attention that go into their many other products. Their investment in traceability and the sophistication of their operations stood out as especially impressive.
I left more impressed than when I arrived. The company’s strong culture, commitment to quality and respect for the land and people involved in production reinforce why consumers can trust their products. A short video featuring Brian Antle, Lettuce Production Manager, captures the passion and respect that define Tanimura & Antle’s approach.
The more shoppers understand how food reaches grocery shelves, the better choices they can make for their families. Tanimura & Antle’s vegetables are tended from seed to store shelf, and I’m honored to share information that helps consumers feel confident about the produce they buy.
The Produce Mom Loves September
September is an exciting month in the produce department. With many items in season, fruits and vegetables are plentiful and often more affordable. September also marks Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month and Organics Month, a great time to encourage people to add more produce to their plates.
As a Produce for Better Health Ambassador, I encourage everyone to aim to fill half their plate with fruits and vegetables. All forms count toward that goal—fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100% juice—and variety helps keep meals interesting and nutritious.
Since September celebrates organics, I also want to highlight and thank partners who grow organically. If you don’t typically buy organic produce, this is a good month to give it a try. One partner, Viva Tierra, has been a valued collaborator and supports efforts to promote healthy eating for families.
Thank you to all partners who support initiatives that help families include more fruits and vegetables in their daily meals.
Meet Me at #FreshSummit
If you haven’t made plans yet, consider attending the PMA (Produce Marketing Association) Fresh Summit. This year’s convention and expo runs Thursday, October 16 through Saturday, October 19. It’s a great opportunity to connect with industry leaders and exchange ideas on consumer trends and education.
I’m honored to serve as a judge for the Sensory Experience Contest, which showcases creative, produce-focused recipes. The contest emphasizes that produce should be the star of the dish, and I love seeing exhibitors highlight fresh ingredients in innovative ways.
If you’ll be in Anaheim, please get in touch so we can arrange a time to meet. I enjoy connecting with existing partners and friends and meeting new industry colleagues.
Want to meet up with The Produce Mom in Anaheim? Contact me at [email protected].
I’ll also be teaming up with partners for a #FreshSummit Twitter party live from the expo floor—stay tuned for details. See you in October at PMA #FreshSummit!
