Back to School is a Party!

With four kids, we’ve celebrated a lot of first days. There are nerves and excitement, but we always make it a celebration. First days are milestones worth marking, and our family traditions help turn those jitters into joy.

I recently shared some of my back-to-school ideas in the first issue of Life’s a Party Magazine. From simple traditions to tasty snacks, these ideas bring families together and make the start of the school year memorable.

From little rituals to easy treats, these ideas are meant to inspire you to create your own meaningful traditions on the first day of school.

Make it Special From Breakfast to Bedtime

Childhood goes by quickly, so we make special days last all day. For the first day of school, that means filling bellies—and spirits—with a full day of little celebrations that make kids feel loved and excited.

Ready Confetti!

The Ready Confetti card is a sweet reminder that kids are special and loved. Pair the printable card with a tiny confetti pouch keychain or a small bag of confetti they can carry. It’s a cheerful way to remind them to bring a little sparkle with them all day.

First Day of School Breakfast

Start the day with a hearty, celebratory breakfast that includes favorites and a special treat. A filling meal helps calm nerves and gives kids the energy they need for a big day. One of our go-to menus includes:

  • Confetti Pancake Cake
  • Rainbow fruit skewers with yogurt sprinkle dip
  • Baked bacon
  • Soft scrambled eggs
A breakfast spread featuring soft scrambled eggs in black cast iron skillet, bacon on a round white plate, a stack of confetti pancakes on a white cake plate, and a pile of fruit skewers.

The Confetti Pancake Cake is the showstopper—layers of fluffy pancakes with whipped topping and extra sprinkles. I balance the sweetness with protein and fruit so the meal is both fun and satisfying. Stack them up with whipped topping and candles for a pancake party that kids will remember.

Super Cute and Easy Lunchbox Ideas

Keep the excitement going with lunches that feel personal and fun. Simple touches—a smiley fruit, a sandwich cut into a shape, or a favorite dip—make kids more likely to eat and enjoy their meal. Over time I developed a rotating menu of kid-approved ingredients so packing is quick and varied.

These fun and healthy lunchbox ideas make packing lunches easier and more enjoyable for both kids and parents.

After School Snacks

Kids come home hungry—and that’s the perfect time for another small celebration. A satisfying after-school snack helps them refuel and eases the transition from school to home. Two favorites we rely on are:

An After School Snack Board filled with nutritious bites, favorite treats, and a sweet option or two. It’s a fun, shareable spread that makes coming home feel special.

A round wood board with hummus, peanut butter, snack mix, cheese cubes, apple slices, mandarin orange segments, grapes, strawberries, Goldfish crackers, and mini cookies.

The Study Time Snack Mix is another go-to: popcorn, dried fruit, nuts, and a few sweet bits like M&Ms or mini cookies. Sweet and salty, it’s great for homework fuel or a quick treat after school. We keep a batch in a sealed container for easy snacking throughout the week.

‘My First Day’ Questionnaire

First days are full of new faces and big feelings. After a big day, we like to give the kids time to reflect. The ‘My First Day’ Questionnaire invites them to share favorite moments, new friends, and memorable details. It’s an easy way to end the day on a positive note and creates a keepsake to look back on year after year.
