I used my mom’s handwritten pumpkin pie recipe as the base, so this version carries a lot of nostalgia — plus a dash of cinnamon, a pinch of spice, and a bit of dad humor.
Why You’ll Love This Woodfire Smoked Pumpkin Pie
Baking a pumpkin pie on a woodfire grill is an adventurous twist that rewards you with deeper, more complex flavors. The grill accentuates the warm spices in the filling and adds a gentle smoky note that you can’t get from a conventional oven. It’s a great option for outdoor cooks looking to impress guests or anyone who wants a cozy, autumnal dessert with a unique character.
Top Tips for Making Woodfire Smoked Pumpkin Pie
Treat your woodfire grill like an oven and be prepared to monitor temperature and smoke. A few practical tips will help you get consistent results:
- Control the smoke: A light, steady smoke adds nuance. Too much smoke will overwhelm the custard, so bake uncovered for the first 20–30 minutes, then tent with foil.
- Maintain temperature: Aim for about 375°F (190–191°C). Check the grill every 10–15 minutes, especially if you’re new to smoking desserts.
- Use a large mixing bowl: Leave enough room to mix the filling comfortably — crowded bowls create a mess and make it harder to combine ingredients evenly.
- Add a personal touch: Follow a family recipe, wear a nostalgic shirt, or include a small ritual that makes the process fun. Those little touches make the result feel special.
Getting the Perfect Smoky Pumpkin Flavor
After the initial smoking period, cover the pie and continue baking until a butter knife inserted in the center comes out clean — typically around another 30–40 minutes, but times can vary. The brief smoking phase blends with cinnamon and nutmeg to create a warm, autumnal profile with a hint of campfire charm.
Let the pie cool completely before slicing; chilling overnight if possible will help the filling set and let the flavors mellow. Serve chilled with a generous dollop of whipped topping for a classic finish that highlights the smoky undertones.
Why You Should Try This Version
From a silky, spiced filling to a crisp crust with a whisper of smoke, this Woodfire Smoked Pumpkin Pie combines comforting tradition with a contemporary twist. It’s a fun way to push your smoker or woodfire grill beyond savory dishes and proves that dessert benefits from a little smoke, too.
Fire up the grill, tap into those nostalgic family memories, and bring a slice of woodfire magic to your next holiday table.
