Creamy Herb & Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe for Parties

Today’s Recipe

We first shared this creamy herb and onion dip alongside our knækbrød recipe, but it deserves its own spotlight—especially during the holidays. It’s quick to prepare and works perfectly as an appetizer or snack. Serve it with store-bought chips or crackers, or try homemade crackers for a special touch. This dip is crowd-pleasing, easy to scale, and ideal for gatherings.

Dip Formula

A great dip follows a simple formula: a creamy base, a bold flavor element, seasoning, and a fresh or crunchy finishing component. For this recipe the base is sour cream and cream cheese (you can substitute Greek yogurt), the bold flavors come from caramelized onion, garlic powder, and lemon juice, and fresh dill and parsley add brightness. Salt and pepper balance the flavors. Follow this framework and you can easily adapt the dip to your tastes.

Ingredients

The ingredient list is intentionally short and approachable: onion, butter for cooking, sour cream, softened cream cheese, fresh dill and parsley, garlic powder, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. You can swap sour cream for Greek yogurt, add a touch of mayo if you prefer, or fold in chopped cucumber for extra crunch. Use lime instead of lemon if you like a slightly different citrus note.

Instructions

This dip is straightforward but benefits from a little patience. Caramelizing the onion develops sweetness and removes the raw bite. Once the onion is soft and lightly browned, combine it with the creamy base and herbs, taste and adjust the seasoning, then chill if you’re not serving immediately. The result is a smooth, flavorful dip that pairs well with crackers, chips, or crisp vegetables.
