Honey Roasted Peanuts

As a child I dreamed of visiting the UK, and that dream came true in December 2014 when I traveled to London with my dad. Two memories stand out: the view of London Bridge and the irresistible aroma of honey roasted peanuts near Westminster. We bought a portion each and ended up enjoying them for days.

Wanting to recreate that flavor, I experimented at home using simple, wholesome ingredients. The result is this healthier, easy-to-make honey roasted peanuts recipe—crisp, sweet, salty and utterly delicious.

What are honey roasted peanuts made of?

This version is straightforward and lower in sugar than many commercial options. Here’s what you need and sensible substitutions if you want to tweak it.

  • Peanuts. Raw, unsalted peanuts are best so you control the salt. If you only have salted roasted peanuts, reduce or omit added salt.
  • Honey. Real honey gives the classic flavor and glaze. For a low-carb option use a sugar-free syrup or sweetener of choice.
  • Butter. Melted with honey to help the glaze stick. Use dairy-free butter for a vegan version.
  • Coconut sugar. A less processed alternative to white sugar. Brown sugar, cane sugar or regular sugar work too; for keto use a sugar-free sweetener.
  • Salt. Sea salt balances the sweetness. Adjust the amount to taste or use a low-sodium alternative.

Five simple ingredients are all you need. If you want to vary the flavor, try adding a pinch of cayenne for heat or ground cinnamon for warmth and depth.

How to make honey roasted peanuts

  1. Preheat the oven to 320°F (160°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat butter and honey together until melted and combined, either in the microwave or on the stove.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the peanuts with 1 tablespoon of the coconut sugar and part of the salt. Reserve the remaining sugar and salt for finishing. Pour the hot honey-butter mixture over the peanuts and stir to coat.
  4. Spread the coated peanuts in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet so they don’t overlap.
  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir once after 5 minutes, then continue stirring every few minutes to prevent burning.
  6. When roasted, transfer the peanuts to a bowl and toss with the remaining coconut sugar and salt. Let cool for at least 5 minutes to allow the glaze to set.

Can I roast peanuts in the air fryer?

Yes. Place the glazed peanuts in the air fryer basket and cook at 320°F (160°C) for about 6–12 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally to prevent burning. Timing varies by model, so watch for a golden color.
