I’m not going to pretend I’m tidy — housework and I don’t exactly get along. But with important guests arriving next week, I’ve spent the last few days deep-cleaning, scrubbing and straightening up.
This is my oven door, which hadn’t been cleaned in the four years we’ve lived here.

I mixed a generous scoop of bicarbonate of soda with hot water to make a thick paste, then spread it over the dirty areas.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned an oven properly in my 38 years, so this felt like a small victory.
I let the paste sit for about an hour, then used a window paint scraper to lift off the grime.
With a little elbow grease the gunk came away within minutes.

After a final wipe with a clean cloth, the oven door looked much better — Ta-da!

I’ll probably forget how I did it in another four years, so I’m posting the method here to remember what worked.
