I made these fabric envelopes for my daughter who loves celebrating Valentine’s Day. We treat the day as a chance to celebrate all kinds of love. Filling these envelopes with candy, small notes, or tiny paper crafts has become a sweet tradition in our household.

They also make adorable decor in a girl’s bedroom or a bright addition to a sewing room. I like using pom poms and decorative cording for closures instead of buttons or Velcro—the little details add so much charm and keep the envelopes easy to open.

The envelope pattern is simple to draft if you prefer to draw your own. For convenience, patterns are available for purchase if you want a ready-made template.
How to sew DIY Envelopes

Materials:
- Fabric envelope template (optional)
- Fabric scraps in coordinating patterns and colors
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Fabric marker
- Pins
- Blunt tool for pushing corners (bamboo skewer or turning tool)
- Pom poms or small embellishments
- Hand needle
- Decorative cording or baker’s twine
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
Directions:
Follow these step-by-step instructions to sew your fabric envelope:
- Place two fabric pieces right sides together and position the envelope pattern on top. Trace and cut out the shapes.
- With right sides still together, pin the edges, leaving the bottom open for turning.
- Sew around the edges using a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving the bottom unstitched.
- Trim the tip of the flap and clip notches from the side corners to reduce bulk.
- Trim seam allowances to about 1/4″ where needed to help the envelope lie flat.
- Turn the envelope right side out through the open bottom. Use a blunt tool to push out the corners neatly, then press the piece thoroughly.
- Clip the bottom inside corner slightly (about 1/8″) to reduce bulk before folding and finishing.
- Fold the bottom edges inward about 1/8″ and fold the bottom corners neatly; press again so the folds stay crisp.
- Edge-stitch along the bottom to close the opening, then fold the bottom up so it sits just below the top side corners (about 1/8″ below). Press and edge-stitch around the sides and top to finish.
- Fold the top flap down and press. Hand-stitch small pom poms to the flap and the corresponding spot on the body of the envelope.
- Wrap decorative cording or baker’s twine around the pom poms to create a simple closure. Your fabric envelopes are ready to fill and gift.
These envelopes are quick to make and easy to customize with different fabrics, trims, and closures. They work beautifully for Valentine treats, little notes, organizing sewing notions, or adding a handmade touch to gifts.
